Convert rates and measurements

Teach students about conversion factors and how they are used to convert between different units of measurement (e.g., feet to meters, gallons to liters).

Focus on conversions within the metric system, including units such as meters, grams, liters, and Celsius degrees. Reinforce the prefixes (kilo-, centi-, milli-) and their meanings.

Cover conversions in the customary system used in the United States, including units like feet, inches, pounds, and Fahrenheit degrees. Emphasize common conversions students may encounter in daily life.

Introduce dimensional analysis as a method to systematically convert units by multiplying by conversion factors that equal 1, ensuring units cancel correctly.

Provide practice with word problems that require converting measurements and rates, ensuring students can apply conversion skills to real-world scenarios.

Stress the importance of accuracy and precision in conversions, and how to round appropriately based on the significance of the original measurement.

Introduce and demonstrate the use of calculators or online tools for conversions, while emphasizing the importance of understanding the process behind the conversions.

Learn with an example

  • Write a conversion factor to convert centilitres to millilitres. Put centilitres in the denominator so that they will cancel out the centilitres that are given.
598 cL /1  × 10 mL / 1 cL

Multiply.

598 cL / 1  × 10 mL / 1 cL = 5,980 mL / 1

So:

598 cL / 1  = 5,980 mL / 1
  • Write a conversion factor to convert milligrams to grams. Put milligrams in the denominator so that they will cancel out the milligrams that are given.
1,000 mg /1  × 1 g/1,000 mg

Multiply.

1,000 mg/1  × 1 g/1,000 mg = 1,000 g/1,000

Simplify.

1,000 g/1,000  = 1 g/1

So:

1,000 mg/1  = 1 g/1
  • Write a conversion factor to convert grams to centigrams. Put grams in the denominator so that they will cancel out the grams that are given.
657 g/1  × 100 cg/1 g

Multiply.

657 g/1  × 100 cg/1 g = 65,700 cg/1

So:

657 g/1  = 65,700 cg/1
